Tarot Reading for Beginners: 5 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me

I remember my first real tarot reading. I had no idea what to expect, what to ask, or whether I was going to walk out feeling better or worse. Nobody prepared me. I just showed up and hoped for the best.
If you're thinking about getting your first psychic tarot reading — whether you're in Spokane or anywhere else — I want to give you what nobody gave me: the honest truth about what this experience is actually like so you can walk in feeling ready instead of anxious. If you're looking for an honest tarot reading for beginners guide, this is it.
These are the five things I wish someone had told me before my first reading. They would have changed everything about how I experienced it.
1. You Don't Have to Believe in Anything for It to Work
This is the biggest misconception about tarot, and it keeps so many people from ever trying it. You don't need to be spiritual. You don't need to believe in psychic ability. You don't need to have any opinion about tarot at all. You just need to show up with an open mind and a question you'd like clarity on.
I say this as someone who spent years in corporate sales before becoming a psychic tarot reader. I was the most skeptical person in any room. The logical, data-driven, show-me-the-proof type. And tarot still worked for me — not because I suddenly started believing in mystical forces, but because the cards have a way of reflecting patterns that your conscious mind has been too busy or too scared to acknowledge.
Some of my best readings in Spokane have been with people who walked in saying, "I don't really believe in this stuff, but..." and walked out an hour later completely shifted.
Not because I converted them to anything. Because the cards showed them something true about their own situation that they couldn't unsee.
You don't need faith. You need honesty with yourself. That's it.
2. The Cards Don't Predict Your Future — They Reveal Your Present
This was the thing that changed my entire relationship with tarot. I went into my first reading expecting predictions. "Will I get the promotion?" "When will I find love?" "Is this the right decision?" I wanted the cards to tell me what was going to happen so I could stop worrying.
That's not how tarot works. And honestly, that's what makes it more powerful than fortune-telling could ever be.
Tarot reveals what's actually happening right now — the patterns running beneath the surface of your life, the fears driving your decisions, the opportunities you're not seeing, the truth you've been avoiding.
It shows you the full picture of your present situation with a clarity you can't access when you're stuck inside it.
And from that clarity, the future becomes less of a mystery. Not because the cards predicted it, but because when you can see what's really going on, the right next step usually becomes obvious.
3. Challenging Cards Aren't Bad News
If the Death card or the Tower shows up in your reading, you don't need to panic. I promise. These cards have gotten a terrible reputation from movies and TV shows that use them for dramatic effect, but in an actual reading, they're some of the most transformative and useful cards in the deck.
Death means transformation — an ending that makes space for something new.
The Tower means a structure that wasn't serving you is coming down so something better can be built.
The Ten of Swords means the worst is already over.
The Five of Cups means you're grieving, but you're so focused on what you lost that you haven't noticed what's still standing.
Every single card in the deck — even the ones that look scary — carries guidance. There are no "bad" cards. There are cards that tell you hard truths, and those are usually the ones that help you the most.
When a challenging card shows up in a reading with me, I don't deliver it like bad news.
I explain what it's actually pointing to and what you can do with that information. The goal is always clarity and empowerment, never fear.
4. Your Questions Don't Have to Be Perfect
People stress about this way more than they need to.
I've had clients show up to their first psychic tarot reading in Spokane with a carefully written list of questions, and I've had clients show up and say, "I honestly don't even know what to ask. I just feel lost."
Both approaches work perfectly.
If you have specific questions, great — bring them.
"Should I stay at this job?"
"What's blocking me from moving forward?"
"Why do I keep ending up in the same situation?"
These are all excellent starting points.
But if you don't have a specific question, that's fine too. Sometimes the most powerful readings happen when someone simply says, "I need clarity" and lets the cards show what needs to be seen.
The cards don't need a perfectly worded question to give you a powerful answer.
Here's what I'd suggest: think about the area of your life that feels the most unclear or stuck right now. Career. Relationships. A decision you've been avoiding. A feeling you can't shake.
You don't need to turn it into a formal question. Just know where the pressure is, and the cards will speak to it.
5. One Tarot Reading for Beginners Can Change Your Entire Perspective
I don't say this to be dramatic. I say it because I've watched it happen hundreds of times.
Someone walks into a reading feeling confused, overwhelmed, stuck, or afraid. They've been churning on the same problem for weeks or months.
They've talked to friends, Googled everything, made lists, lost sleep. And in 60 minutes, the cards lay out a picture that makes the whole situation suddenly make sense.
Not because the cards are magic. Because when you see your situation reflected back to you clearly — without the emotional fog, without the stories you've been telling yourself, without everyone else's opinions layered on top — you can finally think straight.
You can see what's real and what's fear. You can see what you actually want versus what you think you should want.
That shift in perspective is worth more than months of going back and forth in your own head.
I know because I've experienced it myself, and it's why I do this work now.
The reading that changed my life didn't predict my future. It showed me the truth I'd been running from — that my corporate career was slowly destroying me and that I already knew what I needed to do.
I just needed to see it laid out in front of me to finally trust it.
Your reading might not be about career. It might be about a relationship, a family situation, a decision that's been weighing on you. Whatever it is, the clarity is real. And once you see it, you can't unsee it.
